Safeguarding Children and Young People

This course supports awareness level safeguarding practice and aligns to statutory expectations, including Keeping Children Safe in Education and Working Together to Safeguard Children.

Course introduction

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is a shared responsibility. This Level 1 course provides an essential introduction for anyone who works with, supports, or has regular contact with children and young people in the United Kingdom.

Safeguarding includes protecting children from maltreatment, preventing impairment of health or development, ensuring children grow up in safe and effective care, and taking action to enable all children to have the best possible outcomes.

You are not expected to investigate safeguarding concerns. You are expected to notice concerns, respond appropriately, record factually, and report promptly in line with your organisation’s safeguarding procedure.

This training supports, but does not replace, your organisation’s safeguarding policy, local procedures, or statutory guidance.

If you believe a child is at immediate risk of harm, follow your emergency safeguarding procedure without delay.

If you have a safeguarding concern bring it to the attention of the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Hello and welcome to the Level 1 Safeguarding Children and Young People course. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. This course explains what safeguarding means in the UK, how to recognise concerns, how to respond appropriately, and how to follow reporting procedures. This training supports, but does not replace, your organisation’s safeguarding policy. If you have a concern about a child’s safety, follow your safeguarding procedure immediately.

After completing this course you should be able to do the following.

  • Explain what safeguarding children and young people means within a UK context.
  • Understand personal responsibility for safeguarding in a Level 1 role.
  • Identify the main types of abuse and neglect.
  • Recognise possible indicators and patterns of safeguarding concern.
  • Respond appropriately to concerns and disclosures.
  • Record and report safeguarding concerns in line with organisational procedures.
  • Understand key risks including online safety, peer on peer abuse, and exploitation.
  • Recognise the importance of inclusive and accessible safeguarding practice.
